Season Opener

Spring is knocking on the door and we’ve already had a couple of runs of warmer days. This weekend I got to get out for my first real day of fishing this season. I hit one of the smaller lakes in my area that is a good fishery for both catfish and bass. I figured I’d shake the cobwebs off my gear and see if I could get on the board with a mixed bag.

A couple of hours I picked up my fist fish of the season: a chunky largemouth passing the 20 inch mark. A GREAT way to start the season! This was an unexpected fish that came off of some timber in deep water off the main channel. I was actually moving from one shallow flat to the other when I marked bait fish on my sonar and decided to stop and hit it for a minute.

With such a quality bass under my belt I spent the rest of the day trying to pick up a cat hoping I could pull off a double of trophy fish. It wasn’t meant to be though and I had to ‘settle’ for just the one.

Season Opener!

20″ and change

No complaints. It was great to take advantage of a warmer day and finally get out on the water to do some legit fishing. Let’s hope that this first fish is a sign of great things to come this season!

Next up, Mr. Whiskers…
