Lake Wapello Tournament

I haven’t done much in the way of bass fishing this season but the kayak angling group based over around the Iowa City area is putting on a few tournaments this year and I wanted to make sure I made it to at least one.

So when they scheduled one at Lake Wapello towards the end of June I coordinated with a couple of the guys from the Iowa Paddler’s Armada crew and we worked out the logistics so we could make it down and represent the local group.

We had hoped to go down and get in a little pre-fishing after setting up camp but the timing worked out so that the lake campgrounds were closed for some renovations. The next closest campground was about 10+ miles away so we just made camp there and resigned ourselves to the idea of fishing the lake cold the next day. Not exactly ideal but a little extra challenge is fun sometimes.

It turned out to be a slow day on the water for most everyone involved and many anglers fell short of the 3 fish limit. Larry ended up having to leave early for personal reasons but Ryan and I both managed to grind out three fish each and put in respectable stringers giving us both top-ten finishes in a field of 26.

All things considered, I think 6th place in a bass tournament is pretty good for a guy who’s spent most of his season thinking about catfish.
